All Things Music

Hello Del Mar Scenester.

I hope you are well...and, staying cool.

Now that DelMarScene.com has launched, I am officially fired-up for the 2008 season.  You?  Loving the photos, videos, racing tips, media buzz, and my personal favorite, the Del Mar Summer Concert Series.

In its 15th consecutive year, the impressive Del Mar Summer Concert Series includes SEVEN 4 O'Clock Friday shows and THREE weekend music fests.  Annually, I await the line-up announcement with the same anticipation as a kid waiting for the school year to end, and the Del Mar Fair (sorry, I'm O.G.S.D.) to begin.  In this installment, part one of three, I will explore the first two weeks of the Del Mar Concert Series.  A marquee that includes a heartthrob, a "Heartlight," and an Odd Couple.

GAVIN ROSSDALE.  Friday, July 18th.

The ladies will swoon...

Former Bush frontman/guitarist and Gwen Stefani's baby-daddy (with another on the way,) Gavin Rossdale kicks off the 4 O'Clock Friday series in support of his first solo endeavor, WANDERlust.  With recent appearances on Letterman and Ellen (per my wife,) Gavin posted the following on www.gavinrossdale.com.

"The wanderlust I'm talking about isn't that desire to travel and see the world," Rossdale explains. "It's my overwhelming desire to get out and play music for people. I feel like a racehorse that's been stuck in the stables a bit too long."

So, in addition to his appearance at the Del Mar Concert Series, Gavin Rossdale will be racing in the 8th race under the name "Glycerine."  I've had the opportunity to meet this handsome thoroughbred on several occasions.  Truth be told, he's a charming and affable chap.

Regarding the live performance, Rossdale delivers a solid rock show and loves to see his audience SWEAT (special nod to the Bush show at the Belly Up years ago.)  Let's hope for a hot, summer night.

Check out Gavin Rossdale's first release from WANDERlust, "Love Remains The Same."

SUPER DIAMOND.  Friday, July 25th.

"Swweeeeeeeeeeeeet Caroliiiiiiiiiine.  Bomp.  Bomp.  Bahm..."

According to www.superdiamond.com, San Francisco's "alternative Neil Diamond experience" has been spreading the good word of "Neil" across America for fifteen years.  With appearances on VH1, CNN, and The Today Show, Super Diamond has earned the title of "one of the nation's biggest nightclub attractions."  About twelve years ago, I stumbled into a Super Diamond performance at Street Scene in the Gaslamp.  Instantly, I became THAT guy.  Drunk, swaying, and screaming "TODAY," out of time, during "America."

For those who have yet to "feel the Neil" and experience Super Diamond, here's what I promise:

1.  You will see sun-soaked, enhanced, "Cougars" wrecked on Del Margaritas.
2.  You will sing.
3.  You will dance.
4.  You will rock.
5.  You will see sun-soaked, enhanced, "Cougars" wrecked on Del Margaritas (check it out).

GNARLS BARKLEY.  Saturday, July 26th.

Ahhhhh, the act I am most excited to see....and, our first weekend music fest/infield show.

In mid-2006, Gnarls Barkley, a musical collaboration between uber-producer Danger Mouse and "soul machine" Cee-Lo Green, blew up with their feel good hit of the summer, "Crazy."  It also inspired a killer, impromptu cover courtesy of The Kooks.  Check it here.

Along with a smash in "Crazy," the dynamic duo delivered a critically-acclaimed debut album, St. Elsewhere, packaged with quirky live performances, including dressing up as characters from The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars.  Which begs the following question:  Will Gnarls Barkley suit-up for their Del Mar appearance?  Given recent performances, probably not.  However, if they do, I put my money on jockey outfits.

In April 2008, Gnarls Barkley released their much-anticipated second record, The Odd Couple, and it features the following single/video,  "Run."

Also, here's recent interview with Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo Green on NPR.  It's pretty sweet, check it out

Side-note:  Danger Mouse also produced the forthcoming Beck album.  Genius.

Next week, we'll visit with my favorite local band, some New York hipsters, and the ultimate reggae celebration, bitches.

Aloha, your friend, Chris.
