Opening Week at Del Mar

Del Mar 2009 kicked off with a bang—as Trevor Denman (track announcer) would say, “And-away-they-go!” Opening day recorded an all-time record attendance of 44, 907! Hat wearing athletes & celebrities packed the crowd: Audrina Patridge, Carrie Prejean, Bo Derek, Wilmer Valdarrama, Aaron Rodgers, multiple San Diego Chargers and countless others showed up to enjoy the day.
On Friday, thousands experienced G Love & Special Sauce kick off the first concert from the Del Mar Summer Series. Attendance was strong again Saturday with over 20,000 people here to see the world-class thoroughbred racing. The renowned racing artist Pierre “Peb” Bellocq also made an appearance, signing copies of his mural, which hangs 30 feet long and 6 feet tall and depicts the legends of the last 70 seasons of Del Mar Racing. It was an exciting first week of what promises to be a glorious 2009 season.
