Passionate. Expressive. Raw. These are some of the words used by editors of American Photo magazine to describe the photography of Justin Lee, winner of the magazine’s prestigious photo contest. Selected from over 50,000 entries, Lee, 30, was recognized for his original eye and unique ability to capture the essence of his subject through the camera lens.
A fifth-generation native of Northern California, Lee’s natural talent can be credited in part to his mother, a painter and photographer whose celebrated work depicts the rural ranch lifestyle of his youth. What begin as an innate interest quickly transformed into a professional ambition as he moved to the San Diego area to pursue formal education in the art of photography. He soon realized the benefits of articulating his own rules as an artist as opposed to adopting those of the established photographers he was studying.
Lee’s work reflects his philosophy that the most authentic and evocative work results from identifying his own technique and style.
