DEL MAR, Calif. – Del
Mar’s longest stakes race – the mile and one-half Cougar II Handicap – will
be run on Friday, July 30. And though the day’s focus will be on long-winded
horses covering 12 furlongs to honor a fellow runner who made it to racing’s
Hall of Fame, there will others on the prowl vying for the crowd’s attention
that afternoon. Del Mar’s charmed and charming cougars, a
fun-loving female staple at the seaside oval, will give and take delight in the
opportunity to compete for honors and a crown at the day’s 2nd annual Miss
Cougar Del Mar contest.
Now through Wednesday, July 23, self-proclaimed cougars can
submit their best cougar photo with a one-sentence explanation as to why she
should be crowned Miss Cougar Del Mar 2010 to misscougar@dmtc.com.Third parties are also encouraged to
nominate their cougar friends.
Submissions can now be viewed at http://www.delmarscene.com, where online voting
will take place beginning July 14 to determine the finalists who have clawed
their way to the top.Votes can
also be submitted via Twitter by tweeting “Vote Cougar [number] #dmtc.” Finalists
will be announced July 28 and each potential Miss Cougar will receive the “Day
at Del Mar” package for the Cougar Handicap, including clubhouse admission and
table for four, a paddock tour and VIP passes for the evening’s Common Sense
concert.
Determined by on-site tweets and text, the winner of Miss
Cougar Del Mar 2010 will be announced during the races that day and invited to
present the trophy for the Cougar II Handicap.Miss Cougar Del Mar 2009, Rosie Goldstein, will be in
attendance to sing her rendition of Bing Crosby’s “Where the Turf Meets the Surf”
before the sixth race and hand off her crown to this year’s winner.
Racing at Del Mar happens Wednesdays through Sundays, with
post time for the first race on most days at 2 p.m. On Fridays first post is at
4 p.m. for the first four Fridays of the season and 3:30 p.m. for the last
three. There will be a special Monday racing card on Labor Day, September 6.
