DEL MAR, Calif. - An icon of San Diego’s summer entertainment scene, the Del Mar Racetrack is celebrating 70 years of historic horse racing this year. In honor of the milestone, the track will revisit founder Bing Crosby’s roots and celebrate with budget-friendly deals reminiscent of the good ‘ol days.
Five days of freebies, deals and thrills pack the track’s reshaped weekly calendar:
• Everyday - It’s free to sign up for the Diamond Club, which can be done onsite everyday. Diamond Club membership grants half-off admission any day. As a result, a family of four, with two kids under 18 can spend a full day cheering on the ponies for only $6 total.
• Wednesdays – “Free and Easy Wednesdays” are new this year and include free grandstand admission, a free reserved seat, a free program as well as half-priced beer, soda and hot dogs in Stretch Run concessions every Wednesday with the exception of Opening Day.
• Thursdays - Oggi’s Pizza ‘n Ponies Thursdays will offer Stretch Run admission, a reserved seat, a program, a personal pizza and a soft drink for only $11 when presenting a coupon from Oggi’s.
Seniors (62 and older) are admitted free every Thursday with Diamond Club membership. Additionally, regardless of Diamond Club membership, seniors can enjoy the first and last Thursdays of the season with free Stretch Run admission, a free program and a free reserved seat.
• Fridays - The Three O’Clock Friday concert series returns this year with highly anticipated free concerts every Friday after the last race. This year’s line up kicks off with G-Love & Special Sauce on July 24.
• Weekends –Free handicapping seminars are presented before the first race every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In addition, concerts, giveaways and microbrews add to the weekend value:
o July 26: Plush stuffed Pony Boy giveaway for kids 12 and under
o August 8: Long-sleeve heavy weight t-shirt giveaway commemorating the 70th season
o August 15: Microbrew Festival and Flaming Lips concert
o August 22: Microbrew Festival and Steel Pulse concert
o August 29: Del Mar beach bag cooler giveaway
o Labor Day weekend: The Pacific Classic Racing Festival will pack 11 stakes races and a Reggae Festival into four thrilling days
o Every Sunday: Family Fun Day with free Infield entertainment for the kids
