As a major attraction in Southern California, the Del Mar Racetrack takes conservation very seriously. In addition to energy-conserving lighting and their own water-recycling center, the Track has welcomed recent initiatives to become a leader in sustainability.

Some corporate responsibility highlights include:

• Horse bedding, making up about 5 percent manure by weight is brought to local Mountain Meadow Mushrooms, where it’s then turned into mulch for growing mushrooms. On average, the Thoroughbred Club recycles close to 19 million pounds of stable bedding each year.

• Drought Tolerant landscaping is the newest addition to a laundry list of tactics the Track has adopted in becoming more environmentally conscious. In utilizing low-water use plants and reevaluating the irrigation system to match the plants’ needs, the Track is using roughly 25% less water than five years ago.

• The individual ingredients in the new polytrack surface are fully compliant with environmental standards. The new surface has saved Del Mar more than 3.5 million gallons of water in the process.

• Now made from corn, the shakers for the famous Del Margarita have recently been turned biodegradable, making it safe for our visitors and Mother Nature.

• In 2010, Del Mar added Fetzer wine to it's menu. Fetzer is a leader in the wine industry in sustainability and environmentally friendly practices - including 100% bought green power, eliminating foil stamped labels, pesticides, herbicides and chemical-free vineyards.
