DEL MAR, Calif. – With the $1-million Pacific Classic highlighting the day, Del Mar expects more than 30,000 fun-loving fans to take advantage of a full race card of excitement on Aug. 24. The seaside track’s most dynamic day of racing in its storied history features four prestigious stakes races, record one-day purse payments of over $2.3 million and the finest giveaway ever presented– a deluxe resort-style shirt offered free with paid and prepaid admission.

“We pack Pacific Classic day with record-breaking fun, not wallet-busting prices,” said Del Mar Thoroughbred Club President and GM Joe Harper. “You can join our Diamond Club program free to receive 50 percent off admission and experience the best-valued staycation in all of San Diego County.” The 11-race card on Aug. 24 will treat fans to the 18th running of the Pacific Classic and an opportunity to watch 6-year-old Student Council defend his hard-earned title in the mile and one-quarter battle royale that is worth $600,000 to the winner. The afternoon also includes three additional stakes races and a chance for bettors of all levels to cash in on the payoff of a lifetime with the guaranteed $1,000,000 Pick Six pool.

In addition to the $1-million headliner, which is expected to lure 10 to 12 of the top older runners in the nation, racing fans can watch the $400,000 Del Mar Mile, the $300,000 Pat O’Brien Handicap and the $200,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap. These three races, along with the Pacific Classic, are qualifiers for this year’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships on October 24 and 25 at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. They are part of the national organization’s “Win and You’re In” program, which guarantees the winners of designated races around the country entrance into this year’s Breeders’ Cup championships.

To add to the value of the day’s racing entertainment at Del Mar, the track will spoil racegoers with a free button-up resort shirt with Del Mar embroidery touched off by stylish brown coconut buttons. Post time for the first race on Sunday, Aug. 24, is at 2 p.m. with the Pacific Classic scheduled for approximately 6:45 p.m. (PST). Racetrack admission is free for children under 18, $6 for adults or $3 with a Diamond Club card, which can be obtained for free with a simple sign-up.
